The sarangi is a traditional bowing instrument that originated from India. It is a complex and highly expressive instrument that is known for its soul stirring and emotive sound. The sarangi has a hollow, box- like body made of wood, often carved from a single block, which is covered with a tightly stretched goatskin membrane. It features 4 main strings-three are gut & one Phosphorus Bronze, the rest of 35 sympathetic strings, run underneath the main strings. The instrument has a fretless fingerboard and a small bridge, over which the main strings pass. It is played with a bow made of horsehair.
